Rwandan Pupils Who Saved National Flag in Storm Awarded Educational Support

October 10, 2024 — Six pupils from Cyobe Primary School in Mbuye Sector, Ruhango District, Rwanda, who protected the Rwandan national flag during a heavy rainstorm on October 2, have been awarded full educational support for their future secondary school studies, reported Rwandan newspaper The New Times. The pledge was made by the Heads of School Organization Rwanda and announced on October 9.

According to earlier reports, the six recipients were part of nine students, aged between 10 and 13, who withstood the storm to prevent the flag from being blown away by the wind. One of the students explained, “Our teachers always remind us that the national flag is a powerful symbol. If it falls, it’s as if the country has fallen, and the nation’s hope is diminished.”

On October 7, the Rwanda National Police and Ruhango District officials honored the nine students for their bravery, acknowledging their heroic act. Sister Hellen Nayituriki, founder of HOSO Rwanda, praised the children’s sense of duty by saying, “These children represent the hope of our nation, and that’s exactly the kind of youth we aim to nurture.”
