OCTOBER 10, 2024 — On Thursday, the regional municipality of Durham, Ontario, Canada, observed the 15th annual World Homeless Day by raising a new flag at its headquarters, Durham Radio News reported. The flag was designed by a committee that engaged with focus groups, including individuals who are street-engaged, homeless, or precariously housed.
The final design features two figures symbolizing a community founded on compassion. They are uplifted by a pair of hands, representing the network of service providers, including local government, faith organizations, and other supportive individuals. The flag also includes a roof, signifying the hope for stable housing, while the absence of walls highlights the ongoing need to eliminate barriers to support.
According to its official website, the idea for World Homeless Day originated from online discussions among those addressing homelessness worldwide. The inaugural observance took place on October 10, 2010, to raise awareness and inspire action to combat homelessness.
