16-Year-Old Proposes New Flag for Seba Beach, Alberta

OCTOBER 12, 2024 — A 16-year-old has proposed a new flag design for Seba Beach, Alberta, according to their official website.

Seba Beach is a summer village – a designation for communities in Alberta with low population that primarily attracts seasonal visitors – that sits 85 km (53 miles) west of Edmonton with a permanent population of 229 in 2021. The flag, designed in July this year, was formally presented to the local council in a letter that detailed the meaning of the flag.

The proposed flag features a 1:2 proportion, matching that of the Canadian flag, and incorporates a tricolor scheme of yellow, white, and blue. Each color holds significance: yellow represents the beach, while blue symbolizes the waters of Wabamun Lake.

At the center of the flag is a crest, similar to the Alberta provincial flag, with several symbolic elements. A yellow sun signifies a summer day, while yellow warblers, commonly seen in the summer, represent the village’s bustling summer season. The black-capped chickadee, a year-round resident, reflects the village’s permanent population. A white sailboat captures Seba Beach’s recreational activities and its strong ties to the sailing community. Additionally, the crest is flanked top and bottom by the text “Summer Village of Seba Beach 1920,” marking the year of incorporation.

Residents are encouraged to participate in a survey to share their feedback and vote on the flag design. According to the summer village’s website, the flag “represents our community’s spirit, heritage, and future.”
