Kirkland, Washington Seeks New City Flag; Public Invited to Submit Designs

OCTOBER 17, 2024 — Kirkland, Washington is inviting the public to participate in the design of its new city flag, 425 Magazine reports.

Submissions for flag designs are open until November 15, 2024.

This initiative follows a resolution passed by the Kirkland City Council on July 16, 2024, which aims to create an official city flag through a “fun, collaborative process with the community.” Councilmember Amy Falcone expressed the significance of the project, stating in a press release that “a city flag is more than a piece of fabric — it’s a way to display what kind of community we are and want to be in the future.”

The city has provided design guidelines on its website, which follow the North American Vexillological Association’s standards. The designs must also relate to Kirkland and align with the “city’s values”.

In addition, Kirkland is seeking volunteers to join the Kirkland Flag Learners Advisory Group, which will be responsible for reviewing the submissions, narrowing down the choices, and ultimately making recommendations to the City Council. The semi-finalist designs will be posted online to gather feedback from the community.
