Tunisia Celebrates 197th Anniversary of National Flag with Parade

OCTOBER 19, 2024 — On Saturday, the 197th anniversary of the Tunisian national flag was celebrated on Avenue Habib Bourguiba in Tunis with an event titled “The Flag March”, reported La Presse.

The procession included a parade of majorettes proudly carrying the flag, while many participants wore traditional Tunisian dress, showcasing national pride.

The Tunisian flag, symbolizing independence and sovereignty, was first designed on the orders of Hussein Bey II on October 20, 1827, and officially adopted in 1831. It was reaffirmed by Tunisia’s first constitution in 1959.

The Tunisian flag is red, with a white disk in the center containing a red crescent nearly encircling a red five-pointed star. According to the World Factbook, Its resemblance to the Ottoman flag reflects Tunisia’s history as part of the Ottoman Empire. The red represents the blood shed by martyrs in the fight against oppression, while the white stands for peace. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam, and the flag’s design is inspired by that of Turkey, the successor state to the Ottoman Empire.
