Canarian Nationalists Commemorate the Day of the Nationalist Flag

OCTOBER 22, 2024 — Today, Canarian nationalists commemorate the Day of the Canarian Nationalist Flag, reported the Canarias-semanal.

October 22 marks the first public hoisting of the nationalist flag in 1964.

The Canarian Nationalist Flag is a proposed flag designed in 1964 by the Free Canary Islands Movement (MCL), an independence group that emerged in the 1960s. The flag features the colors white, blue, and yellow, which refer to the flags of the two historical provinces of the archipelago: blue and white from the flag of Tenerife, and yellow and blue from the old flag of Gran Canaria. At its center, the flag displays eight green stars.

The official flag of the Canary Islands is similar but lacks the stars and features different shades of yellow and blue.

Canarian nationalists emphasize that the flag symbolizes the importance of preserving their identity and values, advocating for the protection of culture, traditions, and resources while balancing development and sustainability. Members of the Coalición Canaria gathered in Gran Canaria, according to El Apurón, while Unidad del Pueblo held an event in Sardina del Sur to honor the occasion.
