Art Teacher Talks About Her Winning Design for the New City Flag of Apopka, Florida

OCTOBER 24, 2024 — Faith Lee, a lifelong resident of Apopka and teacher at Apopka Christian Academy, reveals the inspiration behind her winning design for the city’s new flag in an article on The Apopka Voice.

Lee’s design, which won the city’s redesign competition held from August 8 to September 16, incorporates colors and symbols that represent the local landscape and heritage.

According to Lee, the green in the flag stands for life, prosperity, and growth, while yellow represents the sun, prosperity, and optimism, and blue symbolizes tranquility, harmony, sky, and water.

At the heart of the design is a Philodendron leaf, commonly grown in Apopka’s greenhouses, with its organic lines representing the city’s wildlife and plants. The leaf’s shape forms an “A” for Apopka, while two blue wavy stripes depict the nearby Rock Springs and Wekiva Springs. The yellow stripe highlights the city’s connection to the sun and the Sunshine State, and the white at the bottom symbolizes peaceful living in the community.

The flag is set to be unveiled on October 25, 2024, in celebration of Apopka’s 142nd anniversary.
