Tarnów, Poland Starts Annual “Flag on Cars” Event Ahead of Independence Day

OCTOBER 28, 2024 — In Tarnów, the annual “Flag on Cars” (Flaga na samochód) event began today. Over 500 Polish flags will be distributed to residents until supply runs out, Głos24 reports.

Organized by Tarnów City Hall, the initiative encourages citizens to display white and red flags on vehicles or other visible spots in honor of Poland’s 106th Independence Day on November 11.

The city government also hopes to see flags displayed on October 30, commemorating the day of Tarnów’s early return to independence, according to Radio RDN.

Initially launched in 2008 for the 90th anniversary of Poland’s independence, the “Flag on Cars” event has since become a tradition.

Residents are also encouraged to reuse flags from previous years.

November 11 marks a significant day in Polish history, celebrating Poland’s independence in 1918, when Marshal Józef Piłsudski assumed command of the Polish army and the Armistice of Compiègne ended World War I, leading to Germany’s defeat.
