Panama Celebrates National Symbols Day Amid Weather Emergency

NOVEMBER 4, 2024 — Panama celebrated National Symbols Day (Día de los Símbolos Patrios) today as the country grapples with severe weather caused by a tropical depression, resulting in widespread flooding and displacement.

President José Raúl Mulino led National Symbols Day commemorations by hoisting the national flag at the Palacio de las Garzas, reported Panamá América.

This holiday honors the symbols that represent Panamanian identity and pride—the flag, anthem, and coat of arms—during the nation’s month of historical remembrance.

According to Qué Pasa, the festivities began on Sunday, marking the 121st anniversary of Panama’s separation from Colombia, and will conclude on November 28, commemorating Panama’s independence from Spain in 1821.

However, the celebration was overshadowed by deteriorating weather conditions, as heavy rains and strong winds from a tropical depression brought severe flooding, landslides, and other impacts, particularly in Panama’s western region.

The ongoing storm, which began Saturday night and is forecasted to continue until Tuesday, has already claimed four lives and displaced over 200 families.

The extreme weather conditions forced the cancellation of several parades in the hardest-hit provinces as the nation focuses on emergency response and support for impacted communities.
