Republika Srpska Approves Law Allowing Display of Serbia’s Flag at Official Events

NOVEMBER 5, 2024 — The National Assembly of Republika Srpska has adopted amendments to the Law on the Use of Flag, Coat of Arms, and Anthem, permitting the display of Serbia’s national symbols at official events when an agreement exists between the two entities, N1 Bosna i Hercegovina reports.

Republika Srpska’s National Assembly (RSNA) voted on new provisions that allow the flag, coat of arms, and anthem of “foreign countries with which Republika Srpska has signed agreements on special and parallel relations” to be displayed at official events, according to RuSerbia.com. This amendment clears the way for the formal display of Serbia’s national symbols alongside those of Republika Srpska at official gatherings and ceremonies.

The law, introduced by RSNA Speaker Nenad Stevandic, passed with 61 votes in favor, 4 against, and 4 abstentions, with 69 of the 83 Assembly members present for the vote. The Federal News Agency reports that the Bosniak People’s Caucus within the RSNA is expected to convene within the week to discuss whether to initiate a veto, citing potential concerns over the protection of vital national interests.
