New Flag to Honor WWII’s 2nd Moroccan Infantry Division

NOVEMBER 6, 2024 — Arcey will commemorate the 80th anniversary of its liberation on November 15, 1944, with the unveiling of a new flag honoring the now-dissolved 2nd Moroccan Infantry Division (2e Division marocaine d’infanterie), L’Est Républicain reports.

The flag, based on the division’s historic insignia, was designed this year under the guidance of Arcey’s mayor, Michaël Hugoniot, and Jean-Marie Ali, president of Le Souvenir français, a group dedicated to preserving French military memory.

The flag features an emerald-green background with a blue shield edged in silver thread. Emblazoned on the shield is a stork, symbolizing the connection between continents, along with the Cherifian star, the number “2,” and the division’s Arabic motto, “On ne passe pas” (“They shall not pass”).

The 2nd Moroccan Infantry Division, an Army of Africa unit, played a critical role in the liberation of France during WWII before its disbandment in 1946.
