NOVEMBER 9, 2024 — Today, Azerbaijan marks National Flag Day, reported Caliber.Az.
National Flag Day was first instituted by President Ilham Aliyev in 2009, with official approval by Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (National Assembly) in December of that year.
The day celebrates Azerbaijan’s tricolor flag, which was originally adopted on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and later reinstated in 1991 as an emblem of the nation’s independence, according to Report.az.
On November 6, a flag raised at Baku’s State Flag Square achieved a Guinness World Record for the largest flag flown with dimensions of around 36 by 72 meters (118 by 236 feet) and a weight of over 500 kg (1,100 pounds), reported AzerNews. The Guinness World Record notes that the flag has an area of 2,564.02 m² (27,598 ft²), and that it took six tailors to create over a period of two weeks.
Calibre.Az also reports that an updated Flag Museum in Baku, inaugurated the same day, now features a Victory Gallery honoring Azerbaijan’s martyrs and their contributions to independence and territorial integrity.
