NOVEMBER 16, 2024 — In celebration of the 451st anniversary of the city of Santa Fe’s founding, the Municipality and City Council revealed the winning entry of the “A Flag for the City” contest during an official ceremony at the Parque del Sur amphitheater, Diario Uno Santa Fe reports.
The competition, which closed on October 14, received more than 60 submissions. A jury shortlisted three final designs, which were then presented for a public vote.
The contest’s organizers ensured the process was conducted transparently, with participants’ identities anonymized during the evaluation phase. The adoption of a new flag aims to provide Santa Fe with a distinctive emblem that reflects its unique cultural and historical essence, connecting its past, present, and future.
One of the designs, titled Guardián del Colgante, received overwhelming support, with 5,228 votes, representing 49.76% of the total. The design was passed to the jury, which further evaluated it and confirmed it as the winning design.
The design, created by Jeremías Martínez De Mattia, integrates symbols that resonate with Santa Fe’s geography and heritage. The light blue band reflects the Setúbal Lagoon and the Salado River. The white band signifies peace, purity, and integration, values associated with the Argentine Constitution. At the center, the Suspension Bridge (Puente Colgante de Santa Fe), one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, is depicted. Surrounding the bridge, a laurel branch symbolizes glory and triumph, while within the branch, a book represents the Argentine Constitution.
According to the Aire de Santa Fe, Mayor Juan Pablo Poletti, speaking at the Juan de Garay Amphitheater, said that “the flag of the city will be an emblem, a symbol that will unite, embrace, and represent us.”
