NOVEMBER 19, 2024 — A recent Roy Morgan Poll reveals that 61% of Australians support retaining the current National Flag, although this represents a decline of 5 percentage points since 2010.
Conversely, 39% of Australians now support adopting a new flag design, an increase of 10 percentage points.
The poll, conducted on October 22–23, 2024, surveyed 1,312 Australians nationwide, asking: “Do you think Australia should have a new design for our National Flag or not?”
The results indicate strong support for keeping the current flag among voters for conservative-leaning parties, with 76% of Liberal voters, 97% of National voters, and 89% of One Nation voters opposed to change.
However, sentiment differs among left-leaning voters: 56% of Australian Labor Party voters and 72% of Greens voters favor adopting a new national flag.
Respondents cited several reasons for their preference to retain the current flag, including its historical significance, attachment to tradition, and the heritage it represents. Concerns over potential costs and the implications of change were also commonly mentioned.
