Bristow, Oklahoma Adopts Its First-Ever City Flag

NOVEMBER 19, 2024 — The city of Bristow, Oklahoma, now has an official flag, following the conclusion of the Bristow Flag Contest, which sought to design a symbol reflecting the city’s unique heritage, culture, and future, FOX23 reports.

The contest, which ended on July 16, brought in several submissions, with the winning design created by Joshua Harrington, a teacher and coach at Bristow High School. Harrington expressed surprise and pride at his victory, saying, “Kind of shocked honestly, I was like, ‘Oh wow.’ It’s an honor to be a part of Bristow’s history.”

Harrington’s design incorporates the city’s sports team colors—purple, white, and gold—each imbued with symbolic meaning.

“The purple on the left signifies the past and the regal history tied to our ‘Woodland Queen’ moniker,” Harrington explained. “The white represents the peace and prosperity we have now, and the gold symbolizes the bright future ahead.”

Reflecting on his experience, he encouraged others to pursue creative efforts, saying, “You just have to set your mind to something, even if it seems insignificant in the moment. Just put your heart into it—you never know when it’s going to pan out.”

Mayor Kris Wyatt, who praised the initiative and community engagement, noted that Bristow had never previously had an official city flag.

“This is really interesting. I had a young man ask if there was an official flag for Bristow, and from our understanding, there wasn’t,” she said.

“We are more than just what the city does—we are a community, and I love input from residents on things like this.”

While mass production of the new flag has not yet begun, Mayor Wyatt confirmed that flags would be made available for those who wish to display them at homes or businesses.
