NOVEMBER 25, 2024 — Jasper County, Illinois, has unveiled finalist designs for a potential new county flag and launched a public vote to determine whether to adopt one of the new designs or retain the existing flag, according to the County website.
Voting began on November 21, 2024, and will continue until January 6, 2025, and may be done through an online survey or in-person.
The initiative follows the establishment of a flag commission by the Jasper County Board on September 19, 2024. The commission is tasked with selecting up to five designs that best represent the county’s identity. Public feedback from the survey will guide the commission’s report to the County Board, which will decide whether to adopt a new flag or keep the current one.
Jasper County, founded in 1831, adopted its first and only flag in 1976 as part of a Flag Day celebration organized by the Newton Woman’s Club. The flag was designed by the Woman’s Bicentennial Committee and features needlepoint work showcasing the Prairie Chicken, a bird linked to the county’s heritage.
This needlepoint design, while unique, has proven difficult to reproduce due to its intricate craftsmanship.
