DECEMBER 8, 2024 — Supporters of the rebels who removed President Bashar al-Assad today entered several Syrian embassies abroad to replace the national flag with the flag of the Syrian revolution, Reuters and Forbes reports.
In Athens, Greece, rebel supporters entered the embassy and hoisted their flag from the rooftop. Police detained four people but left the rebel flag flying. Alompeint Marouf, 59, said, “Our joy is indescribable, 55 years of horrible dictatorship has finally ended.”
In a video from Forbes, supporters can be seen removing the flag from the embassy in Turkey and displaying the revolution flag with the words “FREE SYRIA”. They left without hoisting the new flag.
In Moscow, the Syrian flag was removed from the embassy building. The TASS news agency reported that embassy staff stated operations would continue as usual on Monday. No explanation was provided for the flag’s removal.
In Madrid, Spain, around 150 people gathered at the Syrian embassy, cheering and shouting “Freedom!” A man pulled down the Assad government’s flag and raised the black, green, and white flag with three red stars used by the rebels. Bilal Kutaini, a 32-year-old dentist present at the scene, called it a historic day, declaring, “We are going to create a free country for all the Syrian people.”
