Leningrad Oblast Marks Day of the Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem

DECEMBER 9, 2024 — The Leningrad Oblast is observing the Day of the Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem today, reports Evening St. Petersburg.

In an official statement, Governor Alexander Drozdenko noted, “The coat of arms, flag, and anthem keep in themselves the spirit of diligence, courage, and steadfastness, which have always been inherent in the inhabitants of the Leningrad land. The strength of our region lies in your diligence and talents, in your energy and warmth of heart. There is no doubt that together we will overcome any obstacles, cherish our traditions, and develop our small Motherland. Let the Day of the Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem of the Leningrad Region always remain a symbol of our unity and pride for our native and beloved region.”

The observance, held annually on December 9, was established by Regional Law No. 22-oz on March 27, 2015, according to the State Budgetary Institution.

The Russian Presidential Library describes the flag and coat of arms of the Leningrad Oblast as consisting of a white upper field with the region’s coat of arms at the center. The lower section features red and blue pointed waves, separated by a thin white wavy line, symbolizing the region’s connection to the Gulf of Finland, rivers, and lakes. The blue represents the region’s waterways, white stands for peace and transparency, and red signifies courage and victory, according to the Oblast government website.

The coat of arms features a two-bladed anchor, symbolizing the ports of St. Petersburg and Vyborg, and a key alongside a fortress wall, representing the region’s strategic and defensive importance. The key also highlights the region’s role as a gateway to the Baltic Sea, reflecting historical trade routes.
