New Frankfort, Kentucky Flag Officially Adopted

DECEMBER 10, 2024 — On Monday, the Frankfort Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the adoption of a new city flag, the State Journal reports.

The ordinance, first introduced on November 18, was passed in partnership with the Capital City Museum and the North American Vexillological Association. The winning design, created by Frankfort resident Amanda Cross, incorporates several symbols from the previous flag but presents them in a more modern and adaptable format, according to a Facebook post by the Frankfort Kentucky Flag Initiative.

The flag features blue and gold stars, representing the unity between historic and modern Frankfort, as well as the old and new capital buildings. A prominent S-shaped curve, symbolizing the Kentucky River, expands towards the hoist to signify the city’s forward-looking growth. The flag maintains the color scheme of the Kentucky state flag to ensure visual cohesion when flown alongside it.

Jim Seaver, communications chair of the Frankfort Flag Initiative, explained to WUKY that the goal was to produce a design that is both memorable and meaningful.

“If you think about what makes a good flag, it should have a fairly simple design with symbolism that really connects with people and is transparent in terms of what it tells you about a community and what is important to the people of that community,” Seaver said.
