DECEMBER 16, 2024 — The Government of Jujuy has officially designated 2025 as the “Year of the Recognition of the National Flag of Civil Freedom,” Diario Nuevo Día reports.
The designation aims to celebrate the Flag of the Civil Freedom – which also serves as the provincial flag of Jujuy – and the tenth anniversary of the acknowledgment of the flag as a historical patriotic symbol by Argentina.
On November 27, 2024, the Province of Jujuy passed Law No. 6437 to formalize this designation. As part of the legislation, all official documents issued during 2025 must include the commemorative phrase. Additionally, the government plans to conduct various activities aimed at promoting awareness and reflection on the legacy of the National Flag of Civil Freedom.
This flag, created by General Manuel Belgrano in 1813, was presented to the people of Jujuy in recognition of their bravery during Argentina’s fight for independence. The flag was first blessed and unveiled in a solemn ceremony on May 25, 1813.
Originally named the “National Flag of Our Civil Freedom” by Belgrano, it measures approximately 4.6 feet by 3 feet (1.40 meters by 0.90 meters). The flag is white and features the seal of the Assembly of the Year XIII in the center, says the government description of the flag.
San Salvador de Jujuy, the provincial capital, has been the official custodian of this historical emblem. Over the years, the flag was housed in various locations, including the Cabildo, the Main Church, and the Legislature. On April 20, 1927, a dedicated hall for the flag’s preservation and veneration was inaugurated.
In 2015, Argentina’s National Congress formally recognized the National Flag of Civil Freedom as a historical patriotic symbol of the nation. Meanwhile, the flag of the Province of Jujuy has served as the provincial flag since 1994.
