West Betuwe Unveils Official Municipal Flag

DECEMBER 18, 2024 — The Dutch municipality of West Betuwe has introduced an official municipal flag, unveiled by Mayor Servaas Stoop during yesterday’s meeting on December 17, the municipal government announced.

The new flag, designed in collaboration with the High Council of Nobility (Hoge Raad van Adel), symbolizes the municipality’s identity and history.

Since its formation in 2019, West Betuwe has used a logo flag. The new flag, created for the fifth anniversary, incorporates elements from the municipal coat of arms.

Mayor Stoop stated, “The design of the flag with municipal coat of arms reflects the rich history of the municipality of West Betuwe. With this official flag we add a new symbol to our municipal identity. Century-old elements from the municipal coat of arms are reflected in this flag. I am pleased that we as a municipality now have this flag in addition to the municipal coat of arms.”

The flag consists of three horizontal parts, each representing key elements of the coat of arms. The top part, in blue-white-blue, refers to the blue pales vair from the coat of arms. The middle partfeatures crenellations symbolizing the historical Van Arkel family. The bottom part, red-yellow-red, reflects gold bezants, simplified representations of gold coins, also drawn from the coat of arms. A black gate in the top-left corner symbolizes the city rights of Asperen and Heukelum.

The existing logo flag will remain in use near the town hall. However, the official flag will be raised on special occasions. As part of its presentation, the new flag will fly atop the town hall until December 24, 2024. Village houses will also receive a copy of the flag for community use, with no restrictions imposed on its display by residents.
