DECEMBER 19, 2024 — Vexillolgist Silvio Fernández received official recognition this Wednesday from the Alta Gracia City Council in Argentina for his creation of the Folkclórica Gaucha flag, a symbol aimed at preserving and representing gaucho culture, Periodismo Mi Valle and AG Noticias report.
The design of the flag was initiated following requests from various folkloric organizations who sought an emblem that reflects their values and cultural identity.
The flag was officially presented at the Cine Teatro Monumental Sierras in Alta Gracia during a major folkloric celebration in 2024.
The Folkclórica Gaucha flag consists of three vertical stripes. The first stripe is celeste, representing the national colors of Argentina and the country’s identity. The second stripe is white, symbolizing peace and harmony. The third stripe is white and black, featuring a pampa guard design, which evokes the gaucho’s rural life and their connection to the Pampas and Patagonian regions. This traditional pampa design, characterized by geometric patterns rooted in the textiles of indigenous Pampas cultures.
The Alta Gracia City Council praised the creation of the flag, stating that it serves as a significant cultural contribution, representing the traditions and values of the gaucho community.
Additionally, the flag has been registered with the International Registry of Civic Arms.
Silvio Fernández, a writer, vexillologist, and heraldist, is also known for designing the Brocheriana flag, which was presented to Pope Francis in 2021.
