Ukraine’s Zlatopil Unveils New Coat of Arms and Flag After Renaming

DECEMBER 30, 2024 — The city of Zlatopil, formerly known as Pervomaiskyi, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, has introduced new heraldic symbols, including a coat of arms and a flag, reports objectiv.tv.

In September 2024, Ukraine’s parliament renamed the city to Zlatopil after local authorities failed to agree on a new name. Since then, the city has been working on rebranding its visual identity.

Mayor Mykola Baksheev announced the completion of the heraldic project, which includes a large coat of arms, a small coat of arms, and a flag.

Public involvement was central to the creation of the symbols. Residents submitted their ideas and designs, which were refined by experts from the Ukrainian Heraldic Society.

The organization praised the final designs for their originality and adherence to heraldic principles, emphasizing their ability to highlight the city’s characteristics.

The small coat of arms features a shield with a star-shaped fortress and three golden wheat sheaves. The large coat of arms builds upon this design, with the shield adorned by a silver city crown and held by two marmots, symbolizing the fortress’s ecological significance as their natural habitat.

“[The marmots] cannot be relocated or artificially introduced, but they have settled here naturally. We even have a kind of pilgrimage of people who come to see them,” said Baksheev to Suspilne.

Beneath the shield is a yellow-green ribbon bearing the red inscription “Zlatopil,” accompanied by wheat stalks and a sunflower blossom.

The flag is square-shaped and divided diagonally into yellow and green triangles. It incorporates the same symbols as the coat of arms: the fortress outline in the yellow triangle and wheat sheaves in the green triangle.

The new symbols are expected to be officially approved by the Zlatopil City Council in late January 2025, completing the city’s rebranding process.
