Alliance of Sahel States Unveils Logo and Motto

DECEMBER 31, 2024 — The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has officially revealed its logo and motto, RFI reports.

According to the La Nouvelle Tribune, the logo features a baobab tree, a sun, and three stars, accompanied by the motto, “One Space, One People, One Destiny.”

At its center is the baobab, a tree emblematic of the Sahel, symbolizing life, strength, and cultural diversity. The tree is framed by a radiant orange sun, representing warmth and hope. Beneath the baobab’s branches, human silhouettes signify the diversity and interconnectedness of the region’s populations. Three golden stars highlight the tripartite commitment of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The unveiling, conducted on December 30 during an official event in Bamako, was accompanied by statements from the military authorities of the three nations.

In addition to unveiling the logo and motto, the AES announced plans to launch official radio and television channels, accessible online, to counter perceived misinformation.

While the AES aims to foster regional solidarity, the initiative also carries implications for the broader international community, particularly the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). According to analysts, the logo and motto signal a unified front against ECOWAS, which has opposed the military-led governments in these countries. The AES appears to be reinforcing its intent to pursue an independent trajectory.
