JANUARY 7, 2025 — Irish Heritage Quebec held its Annual General Meeting in Quebec City on December 17, 2024, where the organization celebrated its history and unveiled a new flag design, reports the Quebec Chronicle Telegraph.
At the conclusion of the meeting, board member and vexillologist John Bertrand presented a proposed flag for Irish Heritage Quebec. The design draws inspiration from the Quebec City flag, featuring a white crenellated border on a green background, and incorporates a large yellow Celtic cross to symbolize local Irish heritage.
The Celtic cross in the flag is a significant emblem, modeled after the one in Artillery Park on McMahon Street. This cross, a gift to the people of Quebec, commemorates their kindness during the Great Migration of the 19th century. Donated by Irish philanthropist James Callery, founder of the Strokestown Park and National Famine Museum, the cross also marks the site of the first Irish parish in Canada.
Irish Heritage Quebec, founded in 1973 by Marianna O’Gallagher and members of the Irish community in Quebec City, aims to preserve and promote the rich Irish cultural legacy in the region. The organization focuses on genealogical studies, historical research, and the promotion of Irish arts and literature.
