Bothwell in Scotland Unveils New Flag in Community Ceremony

JANUARY 13, 2025 — Bothwell, a town in Lanarkshire, Scotland, celebrated the unveiling of its new official flag during a ceremony held at Bothwell Parish Church on Saturday, January 11, according to the Flag Institute.

The winning design, created by Year 7 pupil Ava McBain from Muiredge Primary School, was chosen through a public vote, where it garnered 53% of the support.

Her design features a stylized map of Bothwell, highlighting a central red sandstone castle and the River Clyde flowing to the west. The color scheme represents the colors of its primary schools.

The competition began in October 2024 when the Court’s Vexillologist finalized the shortlist of four designs from numerous submissions, including many from local schools.

The initiative, organized in partnership with the Church of Scotland, aimed to celebrate Bothwell’s heritage, especially in conjunction with the 625th anniversary of Bothwell Parish Church.

Rev. Iain Majcher, minister of the parish, expressed his hopes for the new flag to become a symbol of local pride and heritage. He noted the importance of the flag in fostering community identity, stating, “The flag on our tower is such an iconic image in our village, and it will be a delight to see the new community flag flying.”

The competition received oversight from Phillip Tibbetts, Scotland’s Honorary Vexillologist at Lyon Court. The winning flag has been registered with Lyon Court, ensuring its official status and historical significance for Bothwell. This project reflects a broader effort to raise national awareness of the town and honor its cultural and historical legacy.
