JANUARY 15, 2025 — North Tonawanda, New York, is inviting residents to shape its future by voting on a new city flag design, reports WIVB-TV.
The initiative comes nearly six decades after the original flag, designed by a high school junior in 1967, first flew over the city.
A committee comprising artists, historic preservationists, and residents selected the finalist designs from numerous submissions.
The city’s original flag was born out of a 1966 contest after local marching bands expressed a desire for an official symbol, according to a Facebook post by Mayor Austin Tylec.
Charles Houseman, then a high school junior, created the winning design, which featured the city’s colors of green and white. The flag served as a proud emblem of its era.
The new flag will be displayed prominently at Gateway Harbor Park and other key locations throughout North Tonawanda.
Voting for the top design is open until January 24, 2025 through this link.
