FEBRUARY 20, 2025 — A new legislative proposal aims to make the display of Mexico’s national flag mandatory in all government buildings, reports Consenso Noticias.
The initiative, introduced by Mauro Guerra Villarreal, a deputy from the National Action Party (PAN), seeks to reinforce national identity and patriotism through a visible and dignified placement of the flag.
Guerra Villarreal emphasized that while private institutions would have the option to display the flag, government buildings at all levels would be required to do so.
“We want every government institution to have a visible Mexican flag, in good condition and of appropriate size, so that any citizen visiting a government office or passing by an official building sees our flag and remembers its importance,” he stated.
The proposed reform would amend the Law on the National Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem to ensure that the national flag is displayed prominently in both public and private institutions. The legislator stressed that the measure is intended to strengthen respect for this national symbol.
According to Guerra Villarreal, the national flag serves as a symbol of unity and identity, honoring the sacrifices and achievements of those who built Mexico as a free, sovereign, and democratic nation.
He argued that increasing the flag’s presence in public spaces would reinforce respect for national values and remind citizens of their shared heritage.
