Washington State Flag Redesign Bill Fails to Advance in Legislature

FEBRUARY 25, 2025 — A proposal to redesign Washington’s state flag has failed to move forward in the state legislature, missing a key committee deadline last Friday, reports My Bellingham Now.

The bill, which aimed to replace the nearly century-old flag with a design that better reflects the state’s identity, will not advance this session.

Lawmakers in Olympia faced a critical deadline on February 21, the last day for policy bills to pass out of their respective committees. House Bill 1938, which sought to create a committee to oversee the flag redesign process, was among several proposals that did not advance.

If a bill fails to clear a committee by the cutoff, it is effectively stalled for the remainder of the legislative session.

The bill, introduced by Democratic Representatives Strom Peterson, Julia Reed, and Greg Nance, called for the formation of the Washington State Flag Redesign Committee.

Republicans opposed the measure and encouraged the public to push back against the proposal, says the Seattle Times. With the bill failing to pass committee, it will not move forward in 2025 unless reintroduced in a future session.
