Scotland’s Girvan Launches Public Design Competition

MARCH 8, 2025 — A new initiative to create a flag for Girvan, Scotland is underway, with residents invited to submit their own designs.

The project, led by the Girvan Arts Festival in collaboration with local schools, community groups, and South Ayrshire Council, will see a public vote determine the final design, announced Girvan Arts Festival on their Facebook page.

The idea emerged after a member of the Girvan Lifeboat crew visited Caithness, which has its own community flag. Inspired by this, organizers sought to establish a similar symbol for Girvan, incorporating broad community participation in its design.

The competition is open to all residents of Girvan and the surrounding KA26 postcode area, with exceptions possible for those who can demonstrate a strong connection to the town.

Phillip Tibbetts, a representative of Lyon Court—Scotland’s official heraldic authority—will visit Girvan’s schools to provide guidance on flag design principles and historical context.

The competition runs from March 6 to March 31, with a judging panel narrowing submissions to a shortlist of four designs by April 20.

The public vote will take place from April 21 to May 5, with ballots accepted online and in-person at Girvan Library, the Tourist Information Point, the McKechnie Institute, and the Glendoune Centre.

Once a winner is selected, the design will be officially registered with Lyon Court and the Flag Institute.

The new flag will be available for public use, and organizers hope it will be stocked at the Girvan Tourist Information Point in time for an unveiling ceremony later in the summer.
