MARCH 12, 2025 — Some Venezuelan merchants displayed the national flag today, despite the official date for Flag Day being changed from March 12 to August 3 in 2006, reports Diario Avance.
The change was made nearly 20 years ago under President Hugo Chávez to honor Francisco de Miranda and his Expedition of Liberation. However, many citizens still observe the old date due to habit or political resistance.
Carmen Vera, a vendor, said her boss instructed her to put up the flag after noticing other stores had done so. “He told me to put it at the door to avoid a fine. Many people forget the date was changed,” she said.
Ángel Hernández admitted he still considers March 12 as Flag Day because that’s what he learned in school. “Until I die, that will be a national day for me,” he said.
