Indiana’s Allen County Unveils First Official Flag

APRIL 2, 2025 — Allen County, Indiana, has introduced its first official flag, revealed during the closing ceremony of its year-long bicentennial celebration on Tuesday, reports 21 Alive News.

The flag, selected through a public design competition, replaces the county’s previous use of an unofficial flag with a simple seal on a white background.

According to the design descriptions, the new design features a deep blue field, connecting it visually to the flags of Indiana and Fort Wayne. A white pall—a sideways Y-shape—mirrors elements found in both the Fort Wayne and New Haven flags.

Twenty stars represent the county’s 20 townships, while the emblem, taken from the county seal introduced in 2022, symbolizes Allen County’s defining features: its three rivers, fields, forests, and courthouse.

It was chosen from nearly 400 submissions in a process that began in January 2024. A committee narrowed the entries to 20 finalists, which were then displayed in an exhibit before residents voted on the final eight in October.

The winning flag was formally unveiled on April 1 at the Rousseau Centre, where an exhibition of the finalist designs will remain on display until April 11.

Emily Almodovar, chair of the Allen County Flag Committee and public information officer for the county council, described the challenge of creating a flag that represents a diverse region.

“Our county is huge. You know, we’re almost equal agriculture and then city-life, town-life,” she told WBOI. “Those images that came in did such a good job of really distilling down what does it mean to live in Allen County.”

Allen County officials are set to approve the flag during a legislative session on April 4.
