Mercedes in Corrientes, Argentina, Commemorates Its Flag Day

APRIL 6, 2025 — Mercedes, a city in the province of Corrientes, Argentina, celebrated its Flag Day yesterday, according to Diario 1588, honoring both the city’s emblem and its creator, Gabriel “Cani” Zárate.

The event, organized by the Municipal Government through the Directorate of Culture and the Secretariat of Government, highlighted the legacy of Zárate, a local artist who designed the flag.

The ceremony began at 8:30 AM with the raising of the flag at the Plaza del Bicentenario and Plazoleta Belgrano. The commemoration continued at the central event in Plaza Intendente Rafael Flores, where attendees remembered Zárate’s contribution to the city’s identity.

“An artist who transformed his love for his land into a work that represents us,” said Roberto “Caly” Sánchez, a local councilor, in an Instagram post. He described the flag’s design, featuring elements such as the Itá Pucú stone, the colors of the nation, and the Ñandubay tree, symbolizing the region’s natural beauty and heritage.

The tribute concluded with a floral offering at the “La Merced” Cemetery, where Zárate’s family and municipal authorities honored his memory.

“Thank you, Cani, for your legacy. Mercedes is proud of you,” said Sánchez.
