Jordan Marks Flag Day with Nationwide Celebrations

APRIL 16, 2025 — His Majesty King Abdullah II led official commemorations of Jordan’s Flag Day today with a ceremonial flag-raising at Al Husseiniya Palace, Jordan News reports, while military units across the Kingdom spearheaded public celebrations of the national occasion.

The annual event, observed on April 16, was first established by the Jordanian Cabinet as part of the country’s centennial celebrations in 2021, says Roya News.

At the royal ceremony, the King received the national flag from the Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court and passed it to a Jordan Armed Forces–Arab Army (JAF) officer, who then led fellow soldiers in raising the flag while the national flag anthem played.

In a symbolic gesture, the Jordanian flag was also raised on Jabal Umm ad-Dami, the Kingdom’s highest peak at 1,900 meters, located in the Wadi Rum region, says Ammon News. According to a JAF statement, the action “aimed to honor the occasion by symbolizing national unity and loyalty to the homeland and its Hashemite leadership.”

The national flag, officially adopted in the 1920s, draws its design and colors from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt. It also incorporates references to banners from the Prophet Muhammad’s era and the Umayyad, Fatimid, and Hashemite dynasties.

The seven-pointed star in the flag represents the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran.
