APRIL 17, 2025 — American Samoa celebrated its 125th Flag Day on April 17, marking over a century since the first raising of the U.S. flag on Tutuila Island in 1900 and the beginning of the territory’s political relationship with the United States.
“This event honors the historical moment on April 17, 1900, when the U.S. flag was first raised on Tutuila Island, marking the beginning of a political relationship between Tutuila, Aunu’u and the United States,” said Hawai‘i Governor Josh Green, who traveled to American Samoa to join in the commemoration.
While the U.S. flag represents American Samoa’s political affiliation, the territory also has its own territorial flag, which was officially adopted on April 17, 1960—on the 60th anniversary of Flag Day.
Flag Day remains a central fixture in American Samoa’s calendar, symbolizing both its political alignment and the preservation of Samoan culture under U.S. territorial status.
