APRIL 17, 2025 — Police have detained the Chief Editor and Deputy Chief Sub-Editor of Sin Chew Daily following backlash over an inaccurate depiction of Malaysia’s national flag on its front page, the Malaysian National News Agency reports.
The graphic, published April 15 to mark Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit, featured a version of the Jalur Gemilang missing the Islamic crescent—an omission that drew sharp public criticism and official scrutiny, says the Strait Times.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the detentions, stating the two were brought in to assist with investigations and had their computers seized. Both have since been released on bail.
The incomplete flag illustration, reportedly approved by the Chief Editor and designed by the Deputy Chief Sub-Editor, generated using artificial intelligence, raising concerns about editorial oversight.
Sin Chew later apologized, attributing the incident to a technical error due to artificial intelligence, and reprinted the correct version.
The blunder coincided with Xi’s high-profile visit, during which 31 agreements were signed. However, the flag issue overshadowed the diplomatic outcomes.
Critics allege the incident reflects broader sensitivities in Malaysia’s multiethnic society, especially regarding Islamic symbolism. Others suggest the backlash has been amplified by political actors. Sin Chew has suspended both editors pending further investigation.
