APRIL 28, 2025 — Leaders and guests gathered in London to celebrate Faroese Flag Day on Friday, April 25.
This year’s Flag Day Reception, hosted by the Representation of the Faroe Islands at the National Liberal Club, was attended by Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen and Jennifer Anderson, Co-Director for Europe at the UK Foreign Office, according to a Facebook post by the Representation of the Faroe Islands in London.
The event served as both a celebration of the Faroese flag, Merkið, and a reminder of the historical connections forged during World War II.
The Merkið, first raised as a national banner in 1919, was officially recognised by the British Government on 25 April 1940 following the occupation of the islands during the Second World War. The date has since become a national holiday in the Faroe Islands, known as Flag Day, and is commemorated annually both at home and abroad.
The Embassy of Denmark in the United Kingdom noted the significance of this year’s reception, describing the participation of the Faroese Prime Minister as underlining “the importance of the occasion and the strong sense of community across the North Atlantic.”
