MAY 4, 2025 — A new flag design for Jefferson City, Missouri, will be presented to the City Council on Monday, reports the Jefferson City News Tribune, potentially replacing the current flag that has flown since 1990.
The proposed change stems from a collaboration between the city government and Nichols Career Center’s Graphic Design Program.
Students from the local technical school submitted designs that aim to reflect Jefferson City’s history, culture, landscape, and aspirations for the future. The city then invited the public to vote on their preferred design.
Voting opened to Jefferson City residents on April 10 and closed on April 21, with one vote allowed per person.
According to contest guidelines, the committee could suggest modifications, including color adjustments or stylistic refinements, before the final version is digitized and submitted for approval.
The redesign initiative was intended to create a more modern and meaningful civic symbol. “This is your chance to help shape our city’s identity,” the city stated in its announcement of the contest.
The current flag was also a product of public participation, adopted in 1990 through a citywide contest.
