MAY 5, 2025 — As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, the City of Cocoa Beach in Florida unveiled a new city flag, reports the Space Coast Daily.
The new flag features a red, white, and blue palette that reflects both the city’s unique environment and its broader cultural ties.
Red symbolizes the iconic sunsets that grace Cocoa Beach and its identity within the Sunshine State. White represents the nearby space program, a central element of the Space Coast’s economy and identity. Blue highlights the coastal and marine environment that defines the city’s geography and recreational life.
A key feature of the flag is a dolphin, shown leaping from left to right. This element serves a dual purpose: honoring the marine ecosystem that the local community depends on and symbolizing forward momentum.
The direction of the dolphin’s movement deviates from traditional European heraldry, a deliberate choice meant to emphasize the flag’s American character and the youthful, innovative spirit of Cocoa Beach.
The flag’s design originated with a local resident who shared their design process on Reddit.
“It was surprisingly easy,” the designer wrote in a Reddit post. “I simply walked into a public commission meeting with [the] flag in hand and presented it during public comment. The commissioners loved it and agreed to start flying it once the new city hall was finished construction.”
The original prototype featured only white and blue until feedback prompted a revision. “Someone pointed out the Cocoa Beach colors are red, white, and blue, so I adjusted,” the designer noted.
