Massachusetts Opens Public Call to Redesign State Symbols

MAY 9, 2025 — Massachusetts residents are being invited to help redefine the state’s identity by submitting ideas for a new flag, seal, and motto, according to a government statement.

The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission, created by the state legislature in 2024, announced yesterday that it is accepting submissions through June 18, 2025.

The initiative seeks to develop emblems that reflect the state’s values, natural heritage, and diverse communities.

“This is an exciting moment for Massachusetts,” said Education Secretary Dr. Patrick Tutwiler. “Our seal, flag, and motto should reflect not just our history, but the vibrant, diverse community we are today – and the future we are building together.”

Submissions may include design sketches for a new state seal or flag, and written proposals for a new motto.

While participants are encouraged to be creative, the Commission has suggested possible design elements such as native species like the right whale, eastern white pine, or cranberries, as well as references to Massachusetts’ coastline and maritime history. These ideas are intended as inspiration, not limitations.

After the June deadline, the Commission will review submissions and select three final options in each category. Public hearings will follow, offering residents across the Commonwealth the opportunity to weigh in before final recommendations are submitted to the Governor by July 29, 2025.

The Commission was established under Chapter 140 of the Acts of 2024 and is authorized to engage the public and professional designers in crafting symbols that better represent Massachusetts in the present day.
