MAY 24, 2025 — After a protracted and complex approval process, Pozo Cañada, the youngest municipality in the province of Albacete, Spain, will officially present its new municipal flag on June 24, coinciding with the celebration of its patron, Saint John the Baptist, reports La Tribuna de Albacete.
Pozo Cañada, established as an independent municipality in 1999 from the territories of neighbouring municipalities Albacete and Chinchilla de Montearagón, is home to approximately 2,800 residents, according to the municipal government.
The town adopted its official coat of arms in 2004, but until now had no municipal flag to accompany it.
The new flag is a vertically divided rectangular field: green on the hoist side featuring the municipal coat of arms, and white on the fly side. The colours were deliberately chosen to reflect the town’s origins.
The green and white represent the municipalities of Albacete and Chinchilla de Montearagón, explained Mayor Francisco García Alcaraz. Since most of the municipality’s territory comes from Albacete, the coat of arms is placed on that side.
The journey to adopt the flag began with a mayoral proposal followed by a heraldic study, which underwent public consultation, was reviewed by the regional government, and received final approval from the Real Academia de la Historia.
The last formal step occurred on May 16, when the regional Department of Finance published the approval in the Official Gazette of Castilla-La Mancha (DOCM).
Although the municipality had hoped to debut the flag during the 25th anniversary of its independence from Albacete in 2024, delays in the administrative process prevented that timeline.
