Philippines Marks National Flag Day with Widespread Ceremonies

MAY 28, 2025 — Thousands of Filipinos across the country participated in synchronized flag-raising events today to commemorate National Flag Day, with over 1,100 locations joining the annual observance, reports the Manila Standard.

In Manila’s Rizal Park, a ceremonial raising of the flag was conducted by personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, set to the national anthem performed by musical theater actor Leo Valdez.

The event was attended by representatives from government agencies, advocacy groups, and civic organizations.

“We have finally surpassed the 690 nationwide locations who joined us in 2019 to raise our flags simultaneously at 8 a.m.,” said Monique Cornelio Pronove, founder of Salute To A Clean Flag. “Today, there were 1,122 privately owned buildings and estates across the Philippines in Luzon, in Visayas, and in Mindanao who joined our government to raise our flags simultaneously today.”

Arturo Valdez, known for leading the Philippines’ first Mount Everest expedition, led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Philippine Flag, while actor John Arcilla delivered the Salute to a Clean Flag Manifesto.

In Quezon City, a separate ceremony was held at the city hall compound, led by Mayor Joy Belmonte and Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, says the Daily Tribune. Also in attendance were city officials and local police, who ensured security during the event.

National Flag Day is officially observed on May 28 under Presidential Proclamation No. 374, commemorating the first unfurling of the Philippine flag in 1898 following the revolutionary victory in the Battle of Alapan.

The observance continues through June 12, culminating in Independence Day.
