JUNE 18, 2025 — A new flag symbolizing the identity and unity of the Essex and Middle River communities was officially unveiled on Flag Day, June 14, as part of the Heritage Society Museum’s 50th anniversary celebration, according to the Avenue News.
The design, introduced during a gala attended by more than 80 guests, was created by Lilyanna Cotton, a graphic arts student at Kenwood High School.
Featuring light and dark blue fields, the flag reflects both the local high schools’ colours, Kenwood, Chesapeake, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as well as the region’s ties to the sky and water.
At the centre, a white compass represents both the shared heritage of the two communities and Compass Road, which connects them.
The ceremony, held at Buon Appetito, also featured community leaders, elected officials, and longtime supporters of the Heritage Society. Flag historian Dale Grimes led the Pledge of Allegiance, underscoring the connection between the event and Flag Day.
