JUNE 26, 2025 — Ukraine commemorated Crimean Tatar Flag Day today with official ceremonies in the capital, where the traditional blue banner bearing the golden tamga was raised in multiple locations including the Kyiv City State Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Taras Shevchenko National University, reports Espreso.
The flag, which symbolizes the identity and resilience of the Crimean Tatar people, was first adopted in 1917 during the inaugural Kurultai held in Bakhchysarai.
The ceremony in Kyiv has become a tradition in recent years and serves not only as a cultural observance but also as a political statement.
A large flag, measuring 5 by 6 meters, was also unfurled in Saint Michael’s Square, accompanied by the Crimean Tatar national anthem. The event drew participation from local authorities, members of the Crimean Tatar community, military personnel, and civil society representatives.
In Russian-occupied Crimea, the flag’s use is severely restricted. Authorities reportedly prohibit the display of the Crimean Tatar flag unless it appears alongside the Russian tricolour.
