JUNE 26, 2025 — Romania observed National Flag Day today with military and civic ceremonies across the country, says Agerpres, the national news agency of Romania.
In Bucharest, the main celebration took place in Piața Tricolorului, near the National Military Circle Palace, where the Romanian flag was blessed by a military priest and hoisted on the main flagpole as the national anthem played. Similar ceremonies were held in garrisons and localities with military units throughout the country.
Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan described the tricolour as “a symbol of our identity and of national unity.” In a message issued today, he noted, “The three colours – blue, yellow, and red – have accompanied the Romanian people during decisive moments in history: from the Revolution of 1848 and the Union of the Principalities, to the gaining of Independence, the great world wars and the integration into the European Union and NATO.”
Bolojan emphasized that “under the tricolour, Romania has affirmed its sovereignty, built its democracy and celebrated the achievements of its citizens.”
The flag, consisting of vertical stripes of blue, yellow, and red in that order from the flagpole, is codified in Article 12 of Romania’s Constitution as one of the official national symbols, alongside the coat of arms, seal, anthem “Deșteaptă-te române,” and the National Day on December 1.
National Flag Day was established by Law No. 96/1998 and commemorates the moment in June 1848 when the revolutionary government in Wallachia officially adopted the tricolour as a national emblem.
“The flag, alongside the other national symbols, connects the past – marked by sacrifice – to the future we are building together,” Prime Minister Bolojan stated.
