JUNE 28, 2025 — The French Society of Vexillology (SFV) has launched an international competition to design the official flag for the 31st International Congress of Vexillology, scheduled to take place in Paris over five days in July 2026, according to a press release by the Society.
The event, organized under the auspices of the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV), will bring together vexillologists from around the world to discuss the study of flags. In keeping with tradition, each congress is represented by a unique flag, and the SFV has opened submissions to designers and enthusiasts worldwide to create this emblem.
Entrants may submit up to three designs, which must follow a specific set of design criteria. Submissions must feature simple, preferably geometric shapes, use a limited number of high-contrast colours from a standard palette, and avoid text or slogans.
Designs should be original and easily recognizable from a distance or when reduced in size, ideally drawing inspiration from the historical or symbolic identity of France or Paris.
While there is no monetary prize, the designer of the selected flag will receive official recognition in the SFV’s bulletin Drapeaux et Pavillons, on its main website, and on the dedicated temporary website for the Paris 2026 Congress. All entries must be submitted electronically by August 31.
A jury of at least five members will review the entries and announce the winning design on Vexiday, October 1, 2025.
Founded in 1967, FIAV unites over 50 vexillological organizations from across the globe. It aims to promote the study of flags through regular congresses and scholarly publications. The 2026 gathering in Paris continues this tradition, with the chosen flag set to serve as a visual representation of the event and its host city.
