JUNE 28, 2025 — In a ceremony held on Friday, June 27, the coastal city of Piriápolis, Uruguay, officially presented its new municipal flag, chosen through a public design competition, reports Cadena Del Mar.
The winning entry, created by local artist Nicolás Becco, was selected from over 70 submissions and is set to become a lasting symbol of the city’s character and history.
Becco’s design features a central black pilaster flanked by two black lines, symbolizing the city’s architectural legacy and structural integrity. The backdrop is orange, representing the sunsets over the Rambla of Piriápolis, while a yellow semicircle evokes the setting sun.
A thin green border encircles the flag, referencing the surrounding hills, San Antonio and Pan de Azúcar, and adding a sense of natural calm.
“The two black lines beside the pilaster can be seen as open arms welcoming visitors,” Becco explained in an interview with Cadena del Mar.
Mayor Carlos Fuentes described the new flag as “a rebirth” for Piriápolis.
“This flag speaks of union, tolerance, and empathy,” Fuentes said.
The initiative began with a call for submissions in May. The selection panel included visual arts educators, municipal authorities, and representatives from the local Tourism and Promotion Association.
Becco received a cash prize of 10,000 Uruguayan pesos ($250 USD) for his winning design. The flag will be flown at municipal events, including international showcases and the city’s birthday celebrations. Its first official location will be Plaza Armenia.
