JULY 22, 2025 — India today celebrates National Flag Day today, commemorating the moment on July 22, 1947, when the Constituent Assembly officially adopted the Tricolour in its present form as the national flag, according to the Times of India.
Across the country, leaders and citizens marked the occasion. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath greeted the people of his state, highlighting the flag’s importance.
In a post on X, Adityanath stated, “From the peaks of the Himalayas to the waves of the Indian Ocean, from the valleys of Kashmir to the streams of Kanyakumari, the ‘Tricolour’ is a proud symbol of the soul, identity, integrity and unity of 140 crore Indians. We all are fully committed and determined to protect its honour.”
The adoption of the flag on this day in 1947 was a pivotal moment, occurring just weeks before India gained independence from British rule on August 15. The design is based on the Swaraj flag, a flag of the Indian National Congress designed by Pingali Venkayya.
The final version was presented to and adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the flag of a free and independent India.
