California’s Moreno Valley Launches City Flag Redesign Contest

AUGUST 3, 2025 — In California, the City of Moreno Valley, in partnership with the Environmental and Historical Preservation Commission (EHPC), is inviting residents to help make history by participating in a City Flag Redesign Contest, according to a press release from early July.

The City is calling on community members of all ages to submit their creative interpretations of the theme: “Having pride for our City’s Past, Present, and Future.”

“This is an exciting contest that will result in an iconic flag that will represent the City for years to come,” said Mayor Ulises Cabrera.

“I am excited to see the talented people of Moreno Valley submit their ideas, and I look forward to us hoisting that new flag up the City Hall flagpole for the first time.”

Per the contest details, the contest is exclusively open to Moreno Valley residents, with local students highly encouraged to participate. Submissions will be accepted from August 11 through October 13, 2025.

Participants are asked to consider several design guidelines: the flag should be simple enough for a child to draw, use only two or three contrasting colors, avoid writing and official seals, and be unique while reflecting the City’s motto, “Where Dreams Soar.”

Symbolism should relate to the past, present, and future, and proposals should avoid copyrighted images or political symbolism.

All eligible entries will be evaluated by the EHPC, with cash prizes awarded to the top three designs. The final selection of the new City flag will be made by the Moreno Valley City Council from among the top three submissions.
