Five Finalists Announced in Montgomery City Flag Contest

AUGUST 3, 2025 — The City of Montgomery, Alabama, has taken a major step toward adopting a new city flag, announcing five finalists from a citywide design contest at a public meeting on Thursday, July 31, reports WAKA Action 8 News.

Launched earlier this year, the contest invited all Montgomery residents aged 13 and older to submit designs for a new municipal flag, one that would unite the community and better reflect Montgomery’s shared values and diverse history. The move comes in response to growing concerns about Confederate imagery present in the city’s current flag, adopted in 1952.

“We had 27 that submitted flags,” said Montgomery City Council member Oronde Mitchell to Action 8 News.

“We narrowed that 27 down to about five. They had the opportunity to come in and talk about their design of the flag and their concepts in-depth. We wanted to see what every mark means, every symbol means, every color means, so we make sure that we were able to explain it to the City Council because it does have to come out of committee once it leaves here.”

The finalists had the chance to present and explain their choices, emphasizing the importance of unity and inclusivity.

The city’s government affairs committee will reconvene in about a month to further discuss the designs. Once a final decision emerges from committee, the new flag proposal will move to the full City Council for approval.
